What is Anacortes Soccer League?
Anacortes Soccer League (ASL) is the Select soccer program for Anacortes. . ASL offers programs for both boys and girls ages 10-18 to play competitive soccer. ASL teams are formed through player tryouts. A team consists of 15-18 players for full field 11-a-side soccer. Formal player tryouts are generally held in early March of each year.
What happens at tryouts?
Our teams are formed through a player tryout process. Each player will be assigned a numbered tryout jersey to be worn at each tryout session. Players will be identified by that unique jersey number during the course of the tryout. Coaches and evaluators will base their selections on player skill and athletic ability demonstrated during the tryouts. Players will receive notification of their tryout results after the conclusion of the last tryout session.
How long is the season?
Select soccer can be a year 'round activity. Teams generally start practicing in April. They generally attend 3 to 4 summer tournaments which may be local or out-of-state. The league season begins the weekend following Labor Day and runs through the middle of December. Teams U-11-19 may enter the Fred Meyer Commissioner's Cup tournament. The tournament begins in January and finishes with State Final games in March.
May my child play other sports?
Yes, particularly at the younger age groups. During the spring and summer months especially, we understand that players may have other activities scheduled. During the fall regular season, coaches will expect players to be committed to their soccer team practices and games.
What teams does ASL play against?
Beginning with the U-14 season, teams go through a seeding process called the League Placement Tournament (the "LPT's") that establish what level of competition that particular team will play at. Teams may be seeded at the Division 1, Division 2, Classic, WSYDL or District Level. The higher the level, the tougher the competition. ASL teams may face teams from anywhere in the State of Washington , depending upon where their team is placed.
What about travel?
Participation in summer tournaments may require travel either locally or around the state. For league play, our U-11 through U-18 teams participate in a competitive league operated by District 1. Home games and practices will be in the local Anacortes area. We generally travel to Bellingham in the north to Seattle/Tacoma in the south.
Why should I or my child be interested in Select soccer?
The Anacortes Soccer League soccer program provides training and development to qualified players to assist them in advancing to play at the highest levels of play available. Many high school and college teams are chiefly comprised of players who have demonstrated their ability through Select Programs. If your child has progressed through recreational soccer and wants to take their game and skills to the next level, Anacortes Soccer League can prepare them to go as far as they want to go.
Are there other Select Soccer Teams?
There are other Select Teams that are within 30-1 ½ hours from Anacortes where your child may be able to play at a higher level than what we currently offer. We encourage players to move up to "Premier" level teams (P1, P2, P3, WSYDL) if they can make those teams. Since we are a new club we have not achieved these levels yet. Clubs that have some Premier level teams are the Whatcom Rangers, Marysville Force, Skagit Storm and Crossfire.
